Lael and I spent an unforgettable week+ wwoofing at Holderhex, a rose and elderflower farm in Unterschwarzenberg. It was especially a joy for me to share this important aspect of my year with Lael, as this was his first wwoofing stay! We couldn’t believe our luck waking up every morning in this idyllic setting, with this generous family as our hosts; and we also on the other hand felt that our labor was needed and valued because it is the busiest time of year on the farm. We learned a ton about rose cultivation and small scale recipe development and production. Lael helped out and honed his barista skills at the farmer’s market coffee and waffle stand. And on our day off we climbed my first Alp!
We come away with sincere intentions to return and wwoof here again, and we feel inspired about creating such a space ourselves, oriented towards growing things and food and craft. It’s something we don’t really know how we will balance in our lives with our opposite orientation towards cities and urbanism, but we are happily thinking about it.
